OCR Announcement Anna Breman RBNZ mortgage rates nz 2026

RBNZ OCR Announcement April 2026: Reserve Bank Holds Rate at 2.25% Amid Fuel Crisis

WELLINGTON, NZ – In a highly anticipated move, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) today confirmed it will hold the Official Cash Rate (OCR) at 2.25%.

The decision, announced at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, reflects a difficult balancing act for Governor Anna Breman’s committee. While the ongoing 2026 Jet Fuel Crisis and Middle East conflict are driving inflation toward a projected 4.2% spike, the domestic economy remains “tender,” with record-low growth and high unemployment.

Why did the RBNZ hold the OCR?

According to the official RBNZ April Monetary Policy Review, the committee reached a consensus to stay at 2.25%, citing two major “countervailing” factors:

  1. The Supply Shock (Inflationary): Surging oil prices have pushed headline inflation toward 3.1%, with the RBNZ now forecasting a jump to 4.2% in the June quarter.

  2. Economic Fragility (Deflationary): New Zealand’s unemployment rate has hit 5.4%, and recent ANZ Business Outlook data shows a sharp fall in business confidence and activity.

The Verdict: The Bank is choosing to “look through” the temporary spike in fuel costs, hoping that weak consumer demand will prevent these costs from turning into permanent wage and price increases. This aligns with the NZIER Shadow Board’s recommendation, which overwhelmingly urged the RBNZ to sit tight.

The 2026 Inflation Outlook

The RBNZ has updated its forecasts for the first half of the year, and the numbers are a wake-up call for Kiwi households:

  • March 2026 Quarter: Inflation is forecast at 3.0%.

  • June 2026 Quarter: Inflation is expected to jump to 4.2% as the fuel shock fully flows through to transportation, airfares, and grocery prices.

What This Means for Your Mortgage (2026)

If you are one of the thousands of Kiwis with a mortgage refixing in May or June, here is the breakdown:

  • Floating Rates: Expect these to remain steady for now, following today’s “hold.“

  • Fixed Rates: Banks have already priced in the risk of future hikes. Even with a “hold” today, long-term rates may remain high because the RBNZ warned that “decisive and timely increases” will be required if inflation expectations become “unanchored.” To see how this affects your specific repayments, use the Sorted.org.nz Mortgage Calculator.

OCR Announcement FAQ

1. When is the next OCR announcement?

The next update is scheduled for Wednesday, 27 May 2026, which will include a full Monetary Policy Statement and updated long-term forecasts.

2. Will interest rates go down in 2026?

It is unlikely. While the RBNZ held the rate today, their tone was “vigilant.” Most analysts expect the next move to be up toward 2.50% rather than down, especially if global energy disruptions persist.

3. How does the OCR affect the New Zealand Dollar?

Following the 2:00 PM announcement, the NZD saw immediate volatility as traders weighed the “hold” against the 4.2% inflation warning. A higher OCR generally strengthens the dollar, but a weak economy can pull it back down.

4. Is this similar to the 2021-2023 rate hikes?

Governor Breman was clear in her recent policy speech: this is a “supply shock” rather than a “demand surge.” The bank is cautious not to over-correct and cause an unnecessary recession.
